Hyperactive Kid
30 June, CD Club

After midnight the Festival events continued at CD Club with the experimental trio Hyperactive Kid from Berlin. The band’s telling name will have revealed that the line-up plays fast, hectic combination of idioms and genres. With his subversive turbulent rhythms the stunningly virtuosic Christian Lillinger repeatedly constructed and destructed the metric structure, accompanied by guitarist Ronny Graupe and tenor/soprano sax player Philip Gropper.

Especially vivacious was their last composition: the drummer played many sound-inducing devices, including a megaphone with a muffler, while the guitarist enriched his Holdsworthian solos with the so-called hammering and pull off techniques as well as with further effects, also by repeated sound loops. Another excellent conclusion of the evening, which in five concerts hinted at the main currents in contemporary jazz.
