Music and Tehnology
Round-table discussion
1 July, CD Club
The first July day of the Festival began with a round table on music and technology, hosted by Miha Zadnikar and participated by Christine Sehnaoui and Bob Ostertag, who the other day guest appeared at Metelkova within the scope of Defonija.
The saxophonist talked about the relation of her predominantly non-electronic music to digital sound technology, compatible in their sonority, but the listener’s expectations are so different for each, that we are dealing with an entirely diverse reception phenomenon. As an autodidact, she addressed also her experience with the conservativeness of many educated instrumentalists, while Ostertag associated this with the technology that begun to impede the spontaneity of live performance, all too dependent on the recordings of older performers. He also mentioned that in America (especially as regards jazz), where oral tradition prevailed, music recording had a beneficial effect, as the recordings boosted the advancement of existing melodies, while European music, based on written tradition, was thereby hindered and conventionalised.
