Matevž Lipanje: Piano Crossing
29 June – 2 July (during evening concerts), Križanke forecourt

This year’s jazz festival begun with an interesting artwork by Matevž Lipanje, an interactive installation, transforming the zebra crossing into a working piano on which the pedestrians make music with their feet.

The “instrument” is composed of a zebra-keyboard in front of the Križanke open-air theatre. The crossing incorporates a MIDI-keyboard, a digital camera pointed at the zebra-keyboard, and a computer with speakers.

Specially devised software detects pedestrians touching individual keys, creating a sound which is then regenerated by a synthesizer with 128 sounds. Concert-goers are invited to play the unusual electronic instrument for three more days.
